What is an ICAP - Individual Career Academic Plan
The ICAP provides a framework for students to see the connections between school coursework and activities in relation to their future career and college goals. Student ICAPs are continuously reflected upon and refined as students connect their personal strengths and interests to self-identified potential careers.District 11 ICAP - Student Quality Indicators and Standards - D11 ICAP 9-28-15.pdf
Benefits of an ICAP
The ICAP is a way to bring self-identified purpose and impactful outcomes to a student's education. Through the development of your child's ICAP they will complete a four-year academic plan that will help them achieve their career and college goals. An ICAP also allows students to accesses Concurrent Enrollment opportunities and Work-Based Learning. More specifically, college and career coursework while in high school.
How can you support ICAP's
The ICAP will require parent/guardian involvement going forward. The ICAP offers an opportunity to support and guide your student's academic plans, career interests, and future education. Ask your child about their ICAP and if you need additional information to support your child, please contact your child's School Counselor.
ICAP data will be stored, accessed and viewed through the Naviance website.
Student/Parent Role
Students are encouraged to use the elements, data, and activities that comprise the ICAP to set SMART goals for the present and the future. Simple, Measurable, Accountable, Realistic, Timely goals help students make their dreams come true and create satisfying and rewarding futures. The more students learn about themselves--their interests, strengths, skills--and use this self-knowledge in their research of careers the more successful they will be in relating their current education to their futures in the world of work.
Students are the most important element of the ICAP process. Students who are active and accountable participants in the direction and development of their Individual Career and Academic Plans will benefit the most from their plans.
Parents and guardians are the primary advocates for their students' participation in their Individual Career and Academic Plans. The support, insights and encouragement that parents and guardians provide to their students as they develop their Individual Career and Academic Plans is invaluable to the success and efficacy of their students' plans.
